Last year, I did something crazy. I dug out the wedding dress that had been tucked away in the very back of my closet for eight years and took it apart.
It wasn’t to reminisce about my youth; it was because I wanted to figure out one thing—why is it that some clothes, even after eight years of not wearing them, you still can’t bring yourself to throw away? While other clothes end up in a donation bag just three months after you buy them.
My hands were shaking as I took it apart. It was a mermaid-style gown with lace imported from France and a silk lining; the stitching was so fine it was almost invisible. When I got to the side of the waist, I noticed a detail—a small patch of matching fabric sewn there, hidden within the pleats. I flipped it over to look—it was a line of tiny handwritten text by the seamstress, written with a water-soluble pen: “To the bride: May every step you take be steady.”
Eight years later, the writing was still there. That patch wasn’t for aesthetics; it was to make the waistline fit my curves better. Only that seamstress knew there was a slight asymmetry in my waist there—she quietly fixed it for me without telling me.
In that moment, I decided to incorporate this discovery into my brand. On the inside of the waistband of all our pants, there’s a small “invisible patch”—not an actual patch, but a reinforcement made with double-layered fabric—so that when you bend over or sit down, an unsightly bulge doesn’t form at the back of your waist. No one will ever notice this detail, just like that line of writing the tailor left all those years ago—only the person who unpicks the seam will know.
Truly good clothing is something the wearer might not be able to articulate exactly what makes it special, but when they take it off to change into something else, their body will remember.
We don’t create flashy designs. Hidden within every piece we make is a message you’ll never see, but your body will surely feel: “You deserve to be treated well.”
